Mathew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.”
One of the hens at the pastor’s house was sitting on a dozen eggs. After the chicks hatched, the mother tried to watch over and protect her babies. She ran after them and brought them back under her wings. When she sensed peril, she screeched for them to come to her and sheltered them with her feathers.
Each week the chicks grew more and more adventuresome and wandered farther from their mother. One day I tried to walk around the clusters of peeping hens. The mother must have thought I was a predator for she came after me. If the pastor hadn’t rescued me I’d have been pecked to death. What a protective mother. I never wanted to hurt her chicks but must have gotten too close to them.
A few days later, a giant hawk swooped down and carried off one of the baby chicks that had strayed away from its mother. The mama shrieked and screeched, but it was too late. She leaped and fell to the ground, but the killer had already taken her baby chick away.
Several weeks later the mother hen suddenly screeched. I looked around as she jumped and darted forward toward a deadly viper. It was too late. The snake had slithered out of the bushes and already bitten several chicks, who died.
I think one day the baby chicks finally learned they were supposed to creep under leaves or jump behind some grasses when their mama screeched warnings of danger at them. But by then the poor mama hen only had five baby chicks left.
Since then whenever I saw a mother hen, shrieking a warning to her babies, it reminded me of God’s love toward us. She warned her babies and tried to gather them close to cover them with her feathers and wings.
The Lord loves us and does everything possible to protect us from harm. He encourages us and warns us through his Word, prayer and other Christians.
God, like a mother hen, wants us close to Him to keep us safe. The Lord loves us and wants to protect us. But if we are disobedient or stray too far away from Him, it is then that we are injured or lost.
Like a mother hen who always protects her babies, so our Lord watches over us. As God’s children let’s be like obedient chicks who stay close to the mother hen.
