Be Glad

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  Psalm 118:24

There was a husband and wife, in Africa who had recently lost a child to sickness. I asked them how they were doing and the husband answered. “We thank God.”

That shocked me.

He said. “My family and I are in good health, have a home and  food to eat. We have three living children. And we know our baby is in Heaven in the arms of Jesus. And we will all be together one day.”

Although their faces were sad, there was a joy and peace in their eyes.

A week later they were praising God in church with singing and clapping.

They were grief-stricken and cried over the loss of a loved one but could  move past the sadness by focusing on God’s goodness. They had as many and sometimes more hardships than their unbelieving neighbors, but their overwhelming joy and gladness were always evident.

Some of the most joyous, truly happy people I’ve ever met, were African Christians. I’ve met some Christians who had literally nothing, but they were truly joyful.

Let’s take a look around us the next time we are in church. Are we believers who rejoice that God is with us, is taking care of us, and has given us another day?

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  Psalm 118:24
