REPENT

“Repent and turn to God.” Acts 3:19

What does repent mean?

An internet word search led me to a fifteen-step plan on how to repent with pictures of kneeling, weeping, bowing one’s head, putting one’s hands together and raising one’s arms. Several religions and cults suggested only six or eight steps to repent. One site interviewed eight Bible scholars who were called on to explain the meaning of repentance.

I agree it is important to understand the meaning of repentance. There are over a hundred verses in the Bible about repenting, but also an equal number about believing on Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Repent means to turn away.

You are going down the road to Hell, living a secular life style, doing everything you want to do, committing unholy acts, and disobeying God’s commands. Your heart is evil and you desire to do wrong and sin. You live a life away from God.

You repent by turning your back on your old life and sin. You do an about-face, a hundred and eighty degree turn-around to follow the Lord because you are genuinely sorry for your past wrongs. You regret all your sins and no longer want to sin. You no longer want to be on the path to Hell and eternal damnation but desire to follow the Lord and walk down His road to eternal life.

“Unless you repent, you too will perish.” Luke 13:3 and repeated in Luke 13:5 “But unless you repent, you too will perish.”

A basic idea, which needs frequent repeating. So is restitution.
