Matthew 5:20 “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpass that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The Pharisees and the teachers followed many laws of praying, fasting and keeping the Sabbath. Their righteousness was only external, not a righteousness of the heart. They substituted the outward acts for the correct inner attitude.

No one will ever be perfect. So a man’s righteousness will never be good enough to get into Heaven, unless a man’s heart is righteous by believing in Christ and repenting.

An African child approached a newly whitewashed building and said to me,  “The outside is clean and pretty, but the inside is still dirty. There’s a lot of people who are like that. Clean on the outside but dirty on the inside.”

Lord Jesus, give us a righteousness of heart and soul.
