Matthew 6:16-18 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full, but when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

The village pastor often called the congregation to fast. The church members met at sunrise in the church to pray and fast until the afternoon. Elderly persons, the sick, and small children were permitted to drink watery corn cereal in the evenings. All others ate no food. On the second and third days of the fasts, they again met at sunrise to pray and fast all day in the church.

Whenever they visited me in the evenings, they had bathed and dressed in clean clothes. Most of the time I never knew they had been fasting until after it was over.

The Father saw in secret and gave them their reward for faithfulness and lack of hypocrisy.
