Matthew 10:38a “And anyone who does not take his cross.”

And follow me. The cross means death. Christ lugged a huge cross to Golgatha, the one on which he was crucified.
Take up your cross means to be willing to die for Christ if and when the time came.
Your cross to bear in life is not your obnoxious mother-in-law. It is not your abusive boss or your unpaid bills. These are not crosses. Your cross is your death. Are you willing to die for Him?

Take up your cross also means dying to self. Put to death your sinful desires. Accept ridicule or shame of the persecution for following Christ. Lay down your life to serve Christ and others.
When you take up your cross, you are telling the world that you are ready to die for Christ.
