Matthew 15:3-6 “Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of god for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother and ‘anyone who curses his father or mother should be put to death. But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God he is not to honor his father with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.”
Corban had become an acceptable way to neglect one’s father and mother. The Corban vow required the person to give money to God and the temple that would normally be used to care for his needy parents. Giving money to the temple sounded worthy but the importance and prestige of that act emphasized the giver.
The men who made the Corban vow disregarded God’s command to care for their parents and used the vow as an excuse not to care for a needy father or mother.
They broke one of the commandments by not honoring their parents.
Sometimes people get caught up running around doing religious actions and church programs but fail to see a neighbor who needs help or an elderly relative who might need a visit of encouragement, even on a Sunday.
