Matthew 17:11-12 “Jesus replied, To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all thins. But I tell you, Elijah has already come and they did not recognize him but have done to him everything they risked.  In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”
The next verse makes the verses 11-12 clear. Jesus was talking about John the Baptist, who had assumed the prophetic role of Elijah.
John confronted sin, urged people to repent, and pointed everyone to the Lord God. He was called to and lived a rough, sparse life in the wilderness wearing camel’s hair and eating honey and locusts.
Jesus was only a few months older than John. They were in their early thirties.
Shortly after Jesus began his public ministry, John was taken and imprisoned by Herod who beheaded John.
Throughout his imprisonment and up to his death John the Baptist preached and pointed everyone to God. John suffered at the same hands as Christ later did.
