Why did God establish a day of rest after six days when Adam did not know work like we have it?

Genesis 2:1-3

God ended his work on the sixth day and rested the seventh day. God was not tired and He did not need to rest. He established this pattern of work and rest for us and set us an example to live by.

Why did God give Adam this example to work and rest? In Genesis 1:28 God told Adam to rule over the fish in the sea, birds of the sky, and every living creature that moved on the earth. Adam’s job was to take charge of this beautiful new place. Adam had chores to do every day.

God gave each of us a desire to work. It may not be physical labor but mental. It is anything that we are doing, something we do even if we don’t punch a time clock or are retired.

“If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” Even after retirement people often keep doing something. It may be volunteer work, gardening, watching grandchildren or delivering food to shut-ins. Studies show that people who have no objective, no job, and no daily routine of things to do, they lose their drive and energy and even their health. After retirement, individuals, who have no hobbies or chores, soon have no reason to get out of bed.

The ideal job is one that brings satisfaction. God created us so we feel joy when we complete a job.  Adam enjoyed being in charge of the creation.

Studies show that people perform better after resting one day in seven. Studies also show that even work animals function better during the rest of the week after one day of resting.

And dedicating one day of every week to focus on God will strengthen us spiritually and make us physically stronger.

Genesis 2:4-6

God prepared the Garden of Eden as the home for the first family. God made a wonderful paradise for them. There was no rain on the earth and it was not needed for God caused a mist from the earth to water the whole ground. I imagine this as an underground supernatural sprinkler system that sprung out of the ground.

Genesis 2:7 Imagine God shaping the physical characteristics of man with His own hands. This word dust in verse 7 does not mean dirt. This word dust means the microscopic elements like carbon, nitrogen, calcium, iron, zinc and other chemicals that make up human beings.

God uniquely created the man different from the animals. When God breathed life through man’s nostrils He breathed the breath of life into the first man making mankind sacred by giving man a spirit and a soul. God specifically imparted this breath to the first man to create him above the animals and higher than the animals.

Man was created in God’s image with an ability to have a personal relationship with God Almighty. God created all mankind equal no matter the color of the skin, the slant of the eyes or the different hair types. All were created to fellowship and maintain a relationship with the Lord God, but we must want that relationship. We must believe in Jesus and repent of our sins.

The Lord God uniquely created each one of us. No one is an accident. The Lord creates each one of us at the moment of our conception. Job 12:10 says “In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Psalms 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb” Each individual is a one of a kind creation of God with a distinctive DNA, an exclusive set of fingerprints and matchless personality. No one is an accident. No one was unplanned by God Almighty.

When God removes His life-giving breath from us, our bodies go back to dust.
